Discover Serifos

Serifos boasts more than 70 beaches, offering something for every taste. Among the most popular are Livadakia, Kalo Ambeli, Vagia, Ganema, Koutalas, Mega Livadi, Sykamia, Platis Gialos, Ai Yiannis, Psili Ammos, Ag. Sostis, Avlomonas and Lia.

Just a short distance from Livadi lies Chora, the island’s capital, offering a rich selection of sights. Highlights include the War Memorial, the open-air theater, Kato Piazza with the Church of Evangelistria, the traditional wash house, Pano Piazza with its neoclassical town hall, the Venetian Castle, as well as the Folklore Museum and the Archaeological Collection.

In both Chora and Livadi, visitors will find shops offering local and tourist products, mini markets, bakeries, and evening entertainment spots. Serifos has a rich history, highlighted by Mega Livadi and the fascinating remains of the old mining site, along with the neoclassical administration building of the mining company. In the area of Megalo Livadi, there is an exhibition featuring minerals and mining tools from that era.

Between Chora and Mega Livadi lies one of the island’s most significant monuments: the White Tower, dating back to the 4th century BC.

Serifos is also home to more than 116 churches – some beautifully restored Byzantine chapels, others nestled in remote locations or hidden within the villages, waiting to be discovered. The Holy Monastery of Evangelistria Akrotiriani lies at the end of a 4 km dirt road branching off the main route to Mega Livadi. The walk is worth it – the Throne of the Cyclops dominates the nearby landscape.

Another important religious monument is the Monastery of Taxiarches, near the village of Galani. Built in 1572, this male monastery resembles a fortress and once hosted a renowned school of interdisciplinary education. In the 17th century, it owned large Venetian estates and enjoyed considerable wealth.

For hiking lovers, Serifos offers a network of scenic trails leading to secluded sights inaccessible by road – such as Tholos, Gria Castle, the lighthouse, Psaropyrgos, and the Cave of the Cyclops.

In Livadi, a diving school has been operating since 2003, and visitors can also rent small boats to explore the coastline.

Wine enthusiasts can visit the Chrysoloras Winery, open to the public for tours and wine tastings.

You can also visit a local bio farm, where you can taste and purchase traditional cheeses and other local products.

There’s a creative workshop on Serifos where art meets the soul of the island. It’s called Artlab—and it brings together clay, people, cultures, memories, and stories. Through games, seminars, exhibitions, and hands-on sessions, Artlab becomes a place of connection: where locals and visitors meet, share, and enjoy moments of learning and inspiration.

Greek Mythology

Serifos is deeply connected to characters and legends from Greek mythology. According to a local version of Homer’s Odyssey, it was on the southwestern part of the island that Odysseus and his men encountered the Cyclops Polyphemus.

The myth of Perseus and Medusa also takes place in Serifos, adding to the island’s legendary aura. In ancient times, the well-known proverb “the frog of Serifos” symbolized isolation and remoteness – a poetic nod to the island’s unique identity.
